Praxis Admission Criteria

The Praxis CBT course is a post-qualification course for health professionals welcoming applicants from a wide range of mental health and social care backgrounds and settings. The course conforms to British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Revised Minimum Training Standards therefore applicants will usually be registered with a professional regulatory body and will have undertaken a minimum period of two years post qualification training and experience*. Please consult the following link for examples of accepted core health professions:
>> BABCP Core health professions

*Exceptions to this are individuals who have undergone preparatory training and may be eligible for accreditation via the BABCP KSA pathway such as Graduate Mental Health Workers, IAPT Personal Wellbeing Practitioners and other Primary Mental Health Care Workers.

NOTE: THE COURSE IS AIMED AT HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN CLINICAL SETTINGS AND IS NOT OPEN FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WITHOUT HEALTH CARE BACKGROUNDS OR FOR INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN HEALTH SETTINGS ON A VOLUNTARY OR NON-PROFESSIONAL BASIS.

In summary the criteria for admission broadly requires:

  • Evidence of relevant experience within clinical settings.
  • Access to suitable patients/caseload
  • Access to CBT clinical supervision
  • Employer/organisational support where appropriate
  • Evidence of CRB check by employer

Requirements for BABCP Accreditation Praxis CBT is not a BABCP accredited course. Course accreditation is a new and developing area in the UK. Currently only full Post Graduate Diploma Courses in CBT can seek BABCP accreditation. BABCP accreditation is the responsibility of the individual not the course. Doing an accredited course makes the individual accreditation process quicker and more straight forward but still requires a professional practice portfolio. Hours studied via Praxis CBT including clinical supervision hours can count towards individual accreditation. Praxis CBT was developed in consultation with BABCP and further amended in consultation with the Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Central Committee. Praxis CBT adheres to NICE Guidance, The IAPT High Intensity Curriculum, The CBT Competences Framework and BABCP Revised Minimum Training Standards. For further information and advice on training courses and accreditation please consult the BABCP. http://www.babcp.com

In addition to Praxis Entry requirements there is seperate University Criteria for Admission to the Academic Programme

University Admission Criteria

To study Praxis with University accreditation and receive CPD credits from Newcastle University an assignment (essay or case study) must be completed and passed for each module.

We are aware that many learners are self-funding and for many people work and home commitments mean that it is not always easy to commit to undertake a postgraduate certificate in one academic year. With this in mind, modules can be purchased singly and completed over an extended period of time if preferred. Each of the Praxis assignments are worth 20 postgraduate credits. A postgraduate certificate is equal to 60 postgraduate credits.

Criteria for Admission for the Academic Programme

At Masters level study most student time will be spent working independently on individual project work which should include significant theoretical content. All applicants must be in a position to fulfill any practice requirements. The general entry requirements for all courses are that applicants can demonstrate this essential capacity for independent study, as well as theoretical and critical abilities and the knowledge, practical and technical skills appropriate to their proposed study area.

A first or second class Honours degree or equivalent from a recognised university if you are a UK resident, while for EU and overseas applicants appropriate equivalence will apply. Applications are welcome from health professionals without the standard qualifications if they can demonstrate the skills and capacity necessary for academic study at postgraduate level which will indicate:
  • the capacity for theoretical debate
  • a high level of motivation
  • the capacity for independent study
  • the ability to achieve the proposed programme of work
  • students for whom English is not their first language must have achieved IELTS level six English language qualification.

For further information about registering for the postgraduate certificate please contact the PRAXIS CBT Team.

All versions of these documents are superseded by this single document.
  • The government plans to publish a new drug strategy later this year. This targeted consultation provides an early opportunity for a wide range of partners to contribute to the development of the new strategy. This consultation is aimed at a wide audience, from charities to enforcement partners, drug workers, voluntary and community sector organisations.
