Praxis CBT Supervision Guidelines

Students need to organize access to a CBT Supervisor while studying Praxis.
  • For a single topic (e.g. Fundamentals of CBT, CBT for Depression, and CBT for Panic) we recommend a minimum of 2 hours of clinical supervision.
  • For students studying more than three topics such as our Praxis Common Mental Health Problems course; or Praxis CBT for Psychosis we recommend a minimum of 6 x 1 hour sessions.
  • For students studying the full range of topics or the university version of Praxis CBT we recommend a minimum of 8 x 1 hour sessions.
It is recommended that supervision be highly active and include components such as role-play, concrete action plans etc. Active methods of supervision have been shown to result in greater change; turning the reflection and discussion in supervision into action in the clinical session. The supervision session should offer a safe environment in which the learners can practice new ways of dealing with situations, rather than trying them out for the first time in the clinical setting following discussion in supervision. Without mechanisms to bring clinical material to supervision, there is a real risk of supervision becoming clinical case discussion. This programme aims to develop CBT skills, and so monitoring of the learner’s competence, in addition to the development of more abstract skills (e.g. conceptualisation) is imperative. Therefore, samples of clinical intervention, whether that be live observation, sitting in on sessions, video or audio tapes, are essential. It is crucial that mechanisms for bringing samples of clinical work to supervision is agreed between learner and supervisor at the outset and that necessary consent issues are addressed.

Reflection on clinical intervention is also central to good CBT supervision. Therefore, it is essential that learners both video/audio tape their clinical sessions and view/listen to these recordings at least once prior to the supervision session, as this is critical to the reflective practitioner/learner experience. A copy of a typical supervision record is available in the Supervision Guidelines and can be taken to supervision sessions in which reflections, learning and action points may be recorded.

The learner should start recording their face-to-face contacts (either video or audio) and play them back to themselves to reflect on their own practice. These recordings are also to be used in supervision sessions. Recording sessions can feel a little strange at first, when a person is not used to it, but it is excellent practice to do so and is therefore worth persevering with.


Praxis CBT Supervisor Criteria
A Praxis supervisor should meet the following recommendations:
  • Normally be working in the same clinical setting (e.g. primary care)
  • Already be a member of the helping professions and hold appropriate qualifications (i.e. must be bound by a code of practice by virtue of their belonging to a profession)
  • Be eligible for accreditation as a CBT practitioner by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)
  • Have a minimum of three years CBT experience in practice since achieving eligibility for clinical practitioner accreditation
  • Be receiving regular CBT supervision themselves from a suitably qualified CBT practitioner
  • Be providing regular CBT supervision
  • Have treated a significant number of clients using CBT, under regular CBT supervision, from a spectrum of complexity and problem areas
  • Be able to provide adequate time for supervision (a minimum of 2 x 1 hour sessions per single topic or a minimum of 6 x 1 hour sessions for Praxis Common Mental Health Problems or Praxis Psychosis; or a minimum of 8 x 1 hour sessions if studying more than three topics or the full university version of Praxis CBT).
