About the PRAXIS CBT Programme
This programme has been developed for practitioners who possess a professional qualification and use psychological approaches with clients as part of their clinical practice but who do not have particular knowledge of CBT. PRAXIS CBT has been developed by highly respected therapists and researchers in the field of CBT training and supervision, with publications in national and international journals.
The programme content focuses on using a CBT approach to commonly experienced mental health problems including: depression; panic disorder (with and without agoraphobia); and generalised anxiety disorder. The online training programme demonstrates CBT in a straightforward yet stimulating and highly interactive way, using a step-by-step approach.

There are three main components to the training:

1. The PRAXIS CBT online programme

Learners progress through the programme at their own pace, whether that be in the work or home setting. Access to the internet is required for working through the programme.

2. Supervision
Supervision is a key component to the training. Learners studying Praxis CMHP are required to receive a minimum of six hours CBT supervision throughout the period of the training. Supervision can be provided on an individual basis or conducted in dyads(i.e. two hours for a dyad). Learners are expected to meet either individually or in pairs, with a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for supervision on six occasions. The supervision sessions last one hour per individual and should ideally take place every two weeks. The setting of these supervision sessions is negotiable between supervisor and supervisee. Learners are required to present video or audio taped clinical material at each of these sessions in order to facilitate constructive feedback and maximise learning. Therefore, it is imperative that learners have access to video and audio equipment to enable recording of clinical sessions and that availability of appropriate playback facilities is ensured to view this case material at supervision sessions.
A set of written guidelines for supervisors are provided to accompany the programme which offer recommendations on how best to supervise learners undertaking this training.

Supervision should be highly active; to encourage high-quality supervision, it is essential that learners video/audio tape their clinical sessions and use these recordings for self-reflection and for reviewing their clinical practice in supervision sessions. The Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale – Revised (CTS-R) is included in Section 30 of the programme for learners to use as a means of self-reflection and for the supervisor to give feedback on CBT competence. The CTS-R can help identify what the learner is doing well and helps draw attention to skill deficits that require attention and further practice.

What actually occurs in supervision and the possibilities of keeping it on track, or getting it back on track, are heavily determined by the way supervision is set up in the first place. For this reason, a supervision contract is included in the Supervision Guidelines. This contract has been taken from the BABCP website (www.babcp.com) and has been adapted to be appropriate for the PRAXIS CBT online programme. It is recommended that this contract be used to help negotiate individual learning objectives. These learning needs and mutual expectations should be clearly recorded and revisited regularly throughout supervision to ensure they are being met.

3. The Measure of Organisational Readiness
The third component relates to a commitment to support of the training and an attempt to ensure optimum learning and retention of knowledge and skills following the training period. For this reason a Measure of Organisational Readiness has been developed which helps highlight strengths and weaknesses within the organisation in supporting the learners in putting into practice what they have learned during the PRAXIS CBT training programme.

The measure should be accessed by the purchaser of the programme prior to commencement of the training and then completed and returned to the PRAXIS CBT office at the following address: Deborah Rodger, PRAXIS CBT Administrator, Psychological Services, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust, St George’s Park, Morpeth, Northumberland, United Kingdom, NE61 2NU.

Academic Component
Praxis can be used as a stand alone course, for CPD/top up training or as blended learning e.g. Newcastle University is utilising Praxis CBT to prepare and support Newcastle University/NTW Trust IAPT High Intensity trainees. Praxis can be studied in single 20 credit modules with Newcastle University from June 2010.

Firstly, there is the highly interactive online training programme which includes text-based information, diagrams and models, video clips, interactive exercises and tasks for the workplace, handouts and diaries, a multiple choice quiz at the end of each section, all of which build up to create a handbook. Learners are encouraged to access the online forums to communicate with other learners and expert guests.

  • This handbook is the latest guidance for all data collection issues within the IAPT Programme. It replaces the IAPT Outcomes Toolkit, the IAPT Key Performance Indicators Technical Guidance and the IAPT Data Quality Assurance Process and Metrics. All versions of these documents are superseded by this single document.
  • The government plans to publish a new drug strategy later this year. This targeted consultation provides an early opportunity for a wide range of partners to contribute to the development of the new strategy. This consultation is aimed at a wide audience, from charities to enforcement partners, drug workers, voluntary and community sector organisations. Responses from members of the public are also welcome. The consultation closes on 30th September, 2010.
